Wisdom from the I Ching: #20 Contemplation
Sep 13, 2026The hexagram of the month is hexagram #20, “Contemplation.” It represents stepping back to gain a higher-altitude perspective. Formed by Wind over Earth, it reflects the position of a tower overlooking the land or a sage observing with complete stillness and awareness. It highlights panoramic vision, deep observation, spiritual alignment, reflection, and taking space before taking decisive action. On a broader scale, this can emphasize scrutiny, systemic audits, high visibility, setting authoritative precedent, and uncovering the underlying truth behind physical movement.
The year’s hexagram #46 Ascending (Earth over Wind) can broadly manifest as high ambition, systemic pushing, organizational expansion, and the long-term investing of energy for key goals. If you notice, both hexagrams are built from the same trigrams, Earth and Wind, but their positions are inverted. In Hexagram 46, Wind works beneath Earth, pushing up from the roots to create progress. In Hexagram 20, Wind moves above the Earth, blowing across the surface openly for all to see.
As a result, Wind is now on top this period; whatever has been built or pushed upward throughout the year is now put on public display. Strengths, flaws, and true motives become completely transparent. The aggressive growth/expansion of the year meets a period of rigorous examination. With Wind blowing across the open Earth, what was hidden under the soil during the ascent is swept away. Expect public transparency, unveiling of long-term plans, and exposure of whether growth was built on solid ground, ineffectiveness, or empty promises.
In a Hexagram 20 “Contemplation” month, continuing to blindly push forward causes conflict. The energetic current calls for strategic awareness, checking and audits, and quiet evaluation. Success during this time period comes from observing the lay of the land, not rushing into the mix. The combination of hexagram 46 and 20 suggests the end of blind pushing and the start of taking space for scrutiny. Fighting the current by forcing expansion will lead to exhaustion or exposure.
To move with this current rather than against it, do not push forward simply out of habit or for the sake of maintaining momentum without first seeing clearly where you are going. Pause when necessary until you have a better line of sight and can make the proper quality-control checks. Rise above emotional noise and petty conflict. Step back and observe the trajectory over a multi-year timeline, asking whether the structure that has been building throughout the year is truly sustainable. This is a time to focus on refinement, establish high standards, and make sure that what you are building is strong enough to endure.
