Wisdom From the I Ching: #43 Decision
Apr 18, 2026The hexagram for the month is #43 Decision. This hexagram is intense. The image suggests that something must be declared decisively or cut away. It represents a buildup that has reached a breaking point, the need to take a clear stand, and either exposing or confronting what can no longer be hidden. Tension here is resolved through decisive action. There is pressure that is seeking release.
Despite this, it warns against reckless force. The situation calls for clarity, not aggression.
Looked at in combination with the year’s hexagram #46 Ascending, which signifies a steady rise, the month’s energetic pattern within that indicates a gradual rise that has reached a point where something must either be clarified decisively or removed to continue upward/forward. Therefore, this month can be characterized as a gate in the year’s process. So while the year speaks of pushing forward/upward step by step, the month interrupts that and tells us that you cannot continue upward unless you confront this now.
Things that have been developing (year hexagram 46), have hit a moment where ambiguity is no longer sustainable, and a clear stance must be taken. The idea is that things cannot keep going as is, and one must now decide. Hidden issues become explicit, and the truth comes out, lines are drawn, and positions become clarified. Also, with hexagram #43 Decision, there is the inherent idea of elimination. Because when one makes a decision, they generally have chosen a course of action which implies discarding the other course(s) of action. So, that means that this period entails removing obstacles, cutting away what doesn’t belong, and exposing what’s in the way. The growth, or pushing forward action, symbolized by the year, is blocked unless something is cleared.
This period is characterized by rising momentum that hits a pressure point where hidden factors force a clear decision. Positions that seemed unclear become clear, and direction gets locked in. Progress may continue, but only after a truth is faced and something is cut away. The tension is between the year, which demands steady patience for progress, and the month, which calls for decisiveness. The warning then becomes that acting too aggressively can disrupt long-term growth, yet avoiding the decision stalls everything. The guidance becomes decisive clarity without overreaction.
