Wisdom From the I Ching: #33 Retreating
Jul 15, 2026This moon will be governed by Hexagram #33, “Retreating,” within a year ruled by Hexagram #46 (Ascending), which creates a classic dynamic tension: strategic retreat tucked within an overall period of growth. For this combination, picture a massive, ancient tree pushing its way up through the soil (Hexagram 46). That's the energy of the year. It represents slow, unstoppable, stepwise advancement. It's a time of promotion, building a foundation, and piling up small efforts to achieve something great. It is an active, forward-moving backdrop.
With Hexagram #33 (Retreating) as the month's current, it acts like a sudden seasonal freeze or a period to step back, conserve energy, and develop strategy. Taking everything into account, the “Retreat” shouldn't be a dramatic or panicked flight. Rather, it should be a soft, yielding, and highly diplomatic step back. You're adapting to the heat, not fighting it. Hexagram 33 is about keeping inferior forces at a distance by maintaining dignified reserve.
Hexagram 46 is about slow, steady building for grand advancement. This tells us that stepping back right now is the most productive thing you can do to fuel the grander fire of the year. It is essentially pointing towards the idea of “Strategic Recalibration”. Because the year wants stepwise ascension (46) but the month demands a pause or strategic recalibration (33), the outcomes depend entirely on whether people force the issue or accept the rhythm.
Hexagram 33 shows us that inferior, chaotic, or toxic forces are on the rise. In the cycle of the hexagrams, the dark lines (Yin) are pushing up from the bottom and slowly displacing the light lines (Yang). The I Ching advises that you cant stop this rising energy by fighting it directly. If one attacks a chaotic situation head-on right now, you'll feed its energy and get dragged down into the mud. Instead, the superior person retreats. Retreat doesn't mean flight, its a correct application of the law of conservation of energy. Its a stepping back to maintain one's dignity, clarity, and strength, leaving the opposing force to exhaust itself. By going silent, withdrawing your participation, and creating emotional or physical distance, you refuse to give the adversarial energy anything to push against.
In hexagram 46, the lower trigram is Wind (Wind’s imagery is also sometimes Wood), which represents gentle, penetrating growth. In the Month’s hexagram 33, the lower trigram is Mountain, which represents stillness, blocking, and a hard boundary. Their interaction would be the unstoppable growth of the year running directly into a massive mountain. You cant grow through a mountain overnight. Therefore, the monthly energy forces the “Wood/Wind" to halt its upward climb, anchor its roots firmly into the mountain rock, and stabilize. The mountain provides the necessary foundation so the growth doesn't become top heavy.
If hexagram 46 is the idea of the growing tree, hexagram 33 is the idea of pruning. If a gardener never prunes a tree, it'll sprout random branches, become chaotic, waste its sap on dead weight, and eventually collapses under its own weight. Hexagram 46 is the tree pushing out new branches while hexagram 33 is the seasonal frost or the gardener's shears cutting away the non-essential parts. The word "retreat" in the I Ching is often misunderstood as weakness or defeat. In reality, hexagram 33 describes a very disciplined, masterful maneuver.
So the general broad scale advice for this period is that rather than drowning in the friction, adopt the mindset of a skilled military strategist or a master gardener. Withdrawing from minor or nonessential battles. Remember that you're not ruining the growth of hexagram 46 by being less fiery and more strategic. You're just clearing away the noise and the inferior forces so that when the next month arrives, your upward climb is faster, cleaner, and a lot more secure.
