The Secret of the Golden Flower – Book Discussion by Stuart Alve Olson, Part 1
May 06, 2026In conjunction with Tim Burkett’s current talks on The Secret of the Golden Flower, we are also making available on the blog a rare archival audio series by Stuart Alve Olson recorded in 2014. These recordings have long been part of our Internal Alchemy Membership library, and we wanted to make them more easily accessible to the broader community as a companion resource for those interested in further study of the text. Tim’s talks and Stuart’s recordings each reflect their own background, experience, and relationship to the tradition, and we hope that having both available will offer visitors additional perspectives and deeper opportunities for contemplation and practice.
In this first session reviewing The Secret of the Golden Flower, Stuart introduces the historical background, translation history, and foundational principles behind the text. Stuart focuses on the importance of clarity and tranquility in meditation, the role of the “heavenly mind” or third eye, and the internal alchemy concepts of before-heaven and after-heaven nature. He explains the symbolism of the golden flower as inner light, discusses the necessity of disciplined twice-daily sitting practice, and outlines how the text prepares practitioners for later methods involving the circulation of light and awakening primordial spirit.
